Samos Wines
The reputation of dessert wines of Samos has transcended the borders of our country a long time ago. Their quality is famous worldwide, due to the ideal terroir and the long experience of the local residents on winemaking. The vineyards of Samos are scattered throughout the island, while particularly in the North part, they are more densely located. The vines are located on narrow terraces, one beyond the other, climbing over the slopes. Some of the them neighbour the sea and others reach 900 metre height. Characteristic is the mountain Ampelos with an altitude of 1,160 meters which is the second highest of the island. However, the most interesting vineyards are located in the northern part, where they are cooled by the “meltemia” (north winds) that, somehow, moderate the high temperatures of Samos. The winds are violent and strong enforcing the growers to prune their vines low, close to the ground. 95% of the vineyards of Samos is covered by the variety white Muscat (Muscat blanc a petits grains) which gives exclusively the P.D.O. Samos wine. Moreover in 1982 the indication “Samos Grand Cru” was provided to wines coming from certain, selected vineyards.
