Gaia Wines Thalassitis Submerged 2019
An idea that seemed crazy and was definitely extremely risky (remember that the first year only 3 bottles survived), finally became true by Gaia Wines and created a year to year anticipation to all wine lovers. We are talking of course about the Thalassitis that is submerged for about 4 years in the waters of Santorini sea, in complete absence of oxygen conditions, among others. The result is an extremely special wine that is sought after by wine lovers and collectors. It is characterized by a gold color, but aromas and mouth feel remind and certainly characterize a "young" wine (at least in a blind tasting), but significantly different from a classic "young" Santorini. The classic citrus aromas with emphasis on grapefruit are present, but the intense minerality (a word that was most probably "discovered" in a wine description for Santorini Assyrtiko) and acidity give a totally different perspective. This experiment shows the exploration potential of this wonderful grape variety and it is more than certain that we will see much more in the near future (e.g. absence of oxygen conditions but not below the sea that could be a basis for comparison, or perhaps submerging other wine labels).
