Three extraordinary wines from Santorini and Nemea, by Gaia Estate
More smoky than the classic Gaia Thalassitis but with the same burning flame of Assyrtiko, the fantastic oaked versions of Wild Ferment and Thalassite Oak are complete, complex and rare interpretations of the Santorinean terroir.
The Santorini wines are telltale expressions of the terroir concept, showing intense earthy aromas such as wet stones along salty flavours on the palate. When oak is used they acquire more smokiness and more weight, becoming the perfect combination for rich and complex gourmet dishes. Think of creamy buttery sauces, strong cheeses, the finest fish on the grill but also grilled octopus and you are there.
The owners Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and Leon Karatsalos are among the pioneers of Santorini, contributing to a great extent to the frantic upward course of Santorini wine. Very early they showed their willingness to lead Assyrtiko high. They showed the same care and attention to their other Gaia Estate in Nemea, the land of Agiorgitiko.
In Thalassitis Oak there is the implementation of Burgundian techniques, while in the multi award-winning Wild Ferment Paraskevopoulos experiments with spontaneous ferments and maturations, in a combination of French and American oak barrels as well as acacia. The result in both wines is simply stunning.
Next to them, Agiorgitiko of Gaia from Nemea, with a superb value for money price, shows how wonderfully charming and enjoyable is Agiorgitiko when the producers understand it for what it really is.
