Gerovassiliou Syrah 2001: A very rare and singular Syrah, available exclusively from Greece and Grapes!

Syrah is undoubtedly the most successful international variety in the Greek wine territory. Many good examples exist all over the country, from north to south. Among them Gerovassiliou Syrah is constantly one of the best! Vangelis Gerovasilliou, the most respected Greek winemaker, produces two Syrahs, the classic one and Evangelo, which has a touch of Viognier in the blend, in a perfumed Côte-Rôtie style.

The classic Syrah is a bench mark expression of the variety in Greece.
It is produced from the oldest vines on the estate, which are situated in Epanomi, Northern Greece. Yields are low resulting in a rich and fleshy style for the long run. Gerovassiliou suggests to cellar the wines up to 25 years following the vintage.

We tasted the rare 2001 few weeks ago and it was in sensational form,
still very fresh on the nose, with abundant blackberries and black cherries along leathery undertones, so classic for Syrah.

"There is a lovely balance on the palate and a
breathtaking combination of a silky texture and savoury ripeness. A gem
at its best!''

Pair it with simple and plain food such as a beef carpaccio, a beef fillet or even a slow cooked lamb.

This is a unique opportunity to taste one of the top Greek reds at its
plateau of maturity!
