Agio Oros

One of the key activities for the monks of Mount Athos has always been viticulture and winemaking. Wine was part of their everyday life, so here, the fertile vineyards enjoy all the beneficial features of the particular microclimate of the peninsula. Here, three PGI wines are produced (Protected Geographical Indication), one white, one pink and one red, called Agioritikos. The varieties that are grown in the region, those underlying the wines being made here are: Assyrtiko, Athiri, Roditis Xinomavro Zoumiatiko, Limnio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Ugni blanc, Grenache rouge, Cabernet and Syrah.
